Gophers Secure Conference Win on Senior Day
BALTIMORE, MD- The Goucher College Gophers (8-7; 4-3 conference) defeated the Wilkes University Colonels (8-9, 3-4 conference) on Saturday afternoon. The Gophers held the Colonels scoreless, winning 2-0 on senior day and breat cancer awareness game.
Madison Zubo led the Goucher offense to a strong start with the first shot of the game coming four minutes in. Wilkes recorded their first shot of the game three minutes later. With the shot from Wilkes being saved, goalie Katie Bloom saw her first action of the game. The next shot of the game did not come until the 13 minute mark. Here, Goucher's Charlotte Bloom recorded her first shot of the game. Just six seconds later, Baylee Klose fired a shot, but Wilkes' defender made the save.
The second quarter saw offensive action at the 22:53 mark from Wilkes. Less than a minute later, Wilkes took another shot. Goucher found their footing with two minutes to go in the second quarter. Laureen Otieno took her first shot of the game. Which was followed by a shot from Lavenda Winde eight seconds later. With less than two minutes in the half, Goucher took a penalty corner. On the corner, Camden West found Angelena Holmes who connected a pass to Zubo where she fired a shot right past the Wilkes goalie. At the end the first half, the Gophers took six shots compared to the Colonels three. K. Bloom recorded one save in the first half.
Zubo took the first shot of the second half (33:38). Zubo followed that shot up with another one, one minute later. Wilkes saw their first shot of the half nine minutes in. Ten seconds later, Wilkes took another shot. Holmes took the last shot of the third quarter with three minutes left.
Wilkes got the offense going in the fourth quarter with a shot on goal four minutes into the quarter but could not get it past K. Bloom. Zubo found the ball in the circle for another shot attempt (53:03). Two minutes later, senior Isa Schenk took her first shot of the game. Less than a minute later, C. Bloom took another shot. The ball bounced off the Wilkes' defenders stick and Holmes found the ball. Then, made a quick pass to Madison Usher who scored the second and final goal for the Gophers. In the last three minutes, the Gophers took two more shots. To end the second half, the Gophers took nine shots versus the Colonels six. K. Bloom tallied two saves compared to Wilkes' three.
The Gophers outshot the Colonels, 15-6. K. Bloom recorded three saves and 60 minutes in goal. Goucher took 12 penalty corners compared to Wilkes' ten.
The Gophers are back in action on Sunday, October 19th at 12pm on Beldon Field.
