Gophers Cap Off Weekend with a Win at Home
BALTIMORE, MD- The Goucher College Gophers (8-7; 3-3 conference) defeated the Concordia University of Wisconsin Falcons (4-7; 0-2 conference) on Sunday afternoon. The Gophers won 2-0.
Ava Barnes got the Goucher offense rolling in the first quarter with a shot in the first three minutes. Goucher kept the shots flowing with one coming from Charlotte Bloom (6:23) and Laureen Otieno (7:04). Two minutes later the Gophers took back-to-back shots. Baylee Klose took a shot on target then, Otieno followed up with a shot of her own three seconds later. Concordia Wisconsin took their first shot of the game with three minutes to go in the first quarter. The Falcons took another shot instantly after their first one. 30 seconds later, Barnes took her second shot of the game.
Goucher had an incredible start to the second quarter. Vivian Onunga scored the first goal for the Gophers two and a half minutes into the second quarter. One minute after Onunga's goal, C. Bloom attempted her second shot of the game. With four minutes left in the quarter, Lavenda Winde took her first shot of the game. Onunga added another shot less than a minute later. To end the first half, Goucher took ten shots versus Concordia Wisconsin's two. Katie Bloom recorded two saves, and the Falcons recorded five.
Goucher was on the attack to start the second half. The Gophers took back-to-back shots three minutes into the second half. K. Bloom tallied another save with the Falcons shot at the 36:01 mark. 14 seconds later, the Falcons fired another shot. Within a one-minute span, the Gophers took five shots.
Winde took the first shot of the fourth quarter. Three minutes later, Onunga tallied another shot for the Gophers. At the 53:42 mark, Madison Zubo fired in the second goal for the Gophers. The Falcons attempted to make a final push with a shot coming with three minutes left. The Gophers did not let up; they closed out the game with two more shots in the final two minutes. At the end of the second half, the Gophers took 12 shots compared to the Falcons six. K. Bloom added another save in the second half. The Falcons added three shots in the second half.
The Gophers outshot the Falcons, 22-5. Zubo, Barnes and Onunga each recorded four shots. K. Bloom recorded three saves and 60 minutes on goal. Goucher took 16 penalty corners versus Concordia Wisconsin's three.
The Gophers are back in action on Wednesday, October 22 as they host conference opponent, Moravian. The game will be at 7pm on Beldon Field. This will be the Gophers last regular season home game.
