TOWSON, Md. - Nick DeSouza (Washington, DC/Archbishop Spalding) nailed a shot from three-point range just as the buzzer sounded tonight to provide Goucher with a 55-52 triumph over Marymount.
DeSouza's game-winning basket was set up by a key offensive rebound by Cameron Brown (Baltimore, MD/Owings Mills) that allowed the Gophers (3-7) to work for the final shot. It was the senior forward's team-leading eighth rebound of the contest, plus he also contributed 11 points to the victory.
The leading scorer for Goucher was Darrin Boswell II (Philadelphia, PA/Joppatowne). His three-point basket with 1:46 remaining put the Gophers in front 51-49 and completed his 19-point performance. A free throw by Brown with 1:30 left to play added a point to Goucher's lead, but the Saints (6-3) pulled even on a three-pointer by Michael Simoneau with 1:10 showing on the clock.
Thanks to Brown's rebound, however, the Saints never got to touch the ball again.
Marymount matched its biggest lead of the contest when a lay-up by Mike Gray put the visitors ahead 48-42 with 7:38 remaining. But then the Saints hit a stretch that lasted more than six minutes during which they went 0-for-3 from the field, missed two free throws and committed six turnovers.
At the outset, the Gophers quickly fell behind by as many as six points as they missed their first eight attempts from the floor. They went ahead for the first time on a lay-up by DeSouza with 1:54 remaining before halftime and enjoyed a 30-29 advantage at the break.
The win provided Goucher with a 24-14 lead in the all-time series between the two schools and was the Gophers' first in three tries this season over a team from the Capital Athletic Conference.
