KINGS POINT, N.Y. - A dunk by junior forward Amir Hakim (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore City College) with :44 remaining put Goucher ahead by a point and junior guard Darrin Boswell II (Philadelphia, PA/Joppatowne) sealed the outcome by making four free throws in the closing seconds today as the Gophers earned a 60-57 Landmark Conference victory over Merchant Marine.
Hakim's dunk was set up by senior forward Tim Merritt (Pasadena, MD/Chesapeake), who finished with 11 points and missed the first double-double of his career by one rebound.
The two teams were never separated by more than five points in the first half, which ended with Goucher ahead 25-24 thanks to a lay-up by Nick DeSouza (Washington, DC/Archbiship Spalding) with :11 remaining in the period. DeSouza led all scorers as he produced 16 points.
The Gophers (6-13, 4-5 Landmark) took a 52-51 lead on a free throw by Merritt and a 54-51 advantage on a lay-up by Hakim with 2:44 left to play. Hakim contributed 12 points to the win.
The Mariners (9-11, 4-5 Landmark) regained the lead at 55-54 on a basket by Ryan Samuel with 1:02 left to play.
Matt Oaks was the lone double-digit scorer for Merchant Marine as he wound up with 10 points.
In avenging a four-point loss at home to the Mariners last month, the Gophers evened the all-time series between the two teams at 2-2.
