TOWSON, Md. - Two free throws by Pat Bailey (Rockville, MD/Magruder) with 2:02 left to play allowed Goucher to pull into a 68-68 tie with Moravian in the Sports & Recreation Center tonight, but that deadlock lasted all of three seconds. The Greyhounds regained the lead when Eric Weaver converted two free throws with 1:59 showing on the clock and went on to record a 78-71 Landmark Conference victory over the Gophers.
Moravian (18-5, 9-3 Landmark) went on to make six more free throws after the pair by Weaver, completing a 32-of-36 performance at the charity stripe by the Greyhounds. The Gophers (6-16, 4-8 Landmark), on the other hand, only went to the free-throw line 18 times the entire contest and they made just nine of their attempts.
The Greyhounds quickly broke out on top, hitting three shots from three-point range in the opening 4:30 to erect a 14-2 lead. The Gophers caught up on a lay-up by Amir Hakim (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore City College) with 2:59 remaining before halftime that made the score 31-31, and they enjoyed a two-point cushion at the break, 35-33.
A three-point basket by Chris Earley provided Moravian with its biggest advantage of the second half, 50-39 with 13:10 left to play. But just like they did in the first half, the Gophers battled back and wrested the lead away from the Greyhounds, going ahead 61-60 on a lay-up by Miguel Negron (Bel Air, MD/Bel Air) with 5:10 showing on the clock.
During the final five minutes, there were four ties and the lead changed hands five times.
Ian Brown (Durban, South Africa/Glenwood Boys) was the leading scorer and rebounder for Goucher as he supplied the Gophers with 14 points and 10 boards for his second double-double of the season.
Mark Franzyshen, who was 12-of-15 at the free-throw line, captured scoring honors for Moravian with 20 points.
