TOWSON, Md. - Goucher overcame a 16-point deficit in the second half tonight to take a one-point lead over Randolph with more than eight minutes remaining. But the WildCats responded with a run of 10 unanswered points which helped them secure a 74-65 non-conference victory over the Gophers.
Randolph, a first-year program being coached by Clay Nunley, who played for head coach Leonard Trevino at Goucher from 1994-98, led 41-30 at the end of the first half and 48-32 when Cameron Shepherd connected from three-point range on the WildCats' fourth possession of the second half.
The Gophers (6-18) answered back and, starting with a three-point basket by Darrin Boswell II (Philadelphia, PA/Joppatowne), outscored the WildCats, 19-3, over the next 5:43. The spurt culminated with a successful lay-up by Marcus Cotton (Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook) that created a 51-51 tie.
Goucher didn't take its first lead of the second half until a lay-up by Kyle Gladden (Baltimore, MD/Lansdowne) with 8:18 left to play put the Gophers ahead 55-54. On the WildCats' next possession, however, Jimmy Greene nailed two free throws to put Randolph (8-14) back in front to stay.
Boswell and Cameron Brown (Baltimore, MD/Owings Mills) shared scoring honors for Goucher with 16 points apiece. Brown also finished with a team-high six rebounds.
Shepherd, who was 6-for-9 from the field, including 4-of-7 from beyond the three-point stripe, led Randolph with 18 points.
