Boswell Knocks Down 14 Points in Loss to RetrieversDec. 8, 2007
BALTIMORE, Md. - For the first time all season, Goucher trailed at the conclusion of regulation tonight. In fact, the Gophers were held to an all-time low point total as they suffered an 82-37 loss to Maryland-Baltimore County.
The 37 points are one fewer than Goucher managed to score last season in a loss to Robert Morris, the last Division I opponent the Gophers faced until they took on the Retrievers (7-2) tonight.
The Gophers (2-5) fell behind 7-0 at the outset as Jay Greene nailed a shot from three-point range, Ray Barbosa converted a pair of free throws and Justin Fry dropped in a lay-up. Goucher didn't get its first points until Marcus Cotton (Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook) made a lay-up 3:34 into the contest.
The Retrievers gained their first double-digit lead on a three-point basket by Barbosa that the score 20-8 with 11:33 remaining before halftime. The period ended with the Gophers trailing 40-15.
Barbosa, who was 9-for-15 from the field and landed five three-point field goals, led all scorers as he contributed a season-high 27 points to the victory.
For Goucher, Darrin Boswell II (Philadelphia, PA/Joppatowne) was the only double-digit scorer as he finished with 14 points. Cotton wound up with six points.
All four of the Gophers' previous losses this season were in games that went into overtime.
UMBC is just the third Division I opponent that Goucher has faced since the Gophers made their intercollegiate debut against McDaniel (then Western Maryland) on Nov. 16, 1990. In addition to last year's game against Robert Morris (an 83-38 loss), the Gophers were beaten by Maryland-eastern Shore, 86-80, during the 1994-95 season.
