2008-09 Record Slips to 1-8 with 75-59 Loss to Generals
January 5, 2009
LEXINGTON, Va. – Despite a .537 shooting percentage, Goucher
suffered a 75-59 loss to Washington & Lee tonight and remained
stuck on one victory this season.
The Gophers never led the entire game and their deficit reached double figures for the first time after only 10:55 when W&L's Zac White was fouled on a three-point attempt and converted all three of the free throws he was awarded to make the score 21-11. Twice after that Goucher closed to within four points, both times on lay-ups by Amir Hakim (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City College), and even by the end of the first half, the two teams were separated by only six points (36-30).
Goucher's first possession of the second half ended with another lay-up by Hakim, which knocked W&L's advantage down to 36-32, but the Generals (8-3) responded with an 8-0 run and assumed a 44-32 lead on a lay-up by Isaiah Goodman.
The rest of the way the Generals' lead fluctuated between nine and 19 points.
Among the things that helped offset the Gophers' 22-for-41 effort from the field were a season-high 21 turnovers and a season-low total of 20 rebounds.
Darrin Boswell II (Nottingham, Md./Joppatowne) was the leading scorer for Goucher as he finished with 16 points for his eighth double-digit scoring performance of the season. Reginald Suggs (Baltimore, Md./Walbrook) and Hakim supplied the Gophers (1-8) with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
White captured scoring honors for W&L with 14 points.
