Gophers Turn Back Saints, Avenge Earlier Loss
TOWSON, Md. For the second night in a row, Goucher shot better than 50 percent from the field. But unlike yesterday in a 16-point loss to Washington & Lee, the Gophers did a much better job protecting the ball tonight, plus they held their own on the boards. As a result, they avenged a four-point loss to Marymount back in November by defeating the Saints, 78-64.

TOWSON, Md. – For the second night in a row, Goucher shot
better than 50 percent from the field.
But unlike yesterday in a 16-point loss to Washington & Lee, the Gophers did a much better job protecting the ball tonight, plus they held their own on the boards. As a result, they avenged a four-point loss to Marymount back in November by defeating the Saints, 78-64.
It also didn't hurt that senior guard Darrin Boswell II (Nottingham, Md./Joppatowne) supplied the Gophers with a career-high 29 points.
Boswell was 11-for-14 from the field, including 5-for-7 from three-point range in his ninth double-figure scoring performance of the season. Prior to tonight, he had never scored more than 22 points in a game since transferring to Goucher from Dowling.
Against W&L, a season-high 21 turnovers and a season-low total of 20 rebounds helped offset the Gophers' 22-for-41 shooting performance (.537). But tonight, they committed only 10 turnovers and grabbed only one fewer rebound than the Saints.
Five of the first seven shots the Gophers (2-8) put up tonight were from three-point range. They managed to connect on four of the three-point attempts – two by Boswell and one each by Donte Brandon (Washington, D.C./Westlake) and Reginald Suggs (Baltimore, Md./Walbrook) – and one of the two-pointers in jumping out to a 14-8 lead in the opening 4:57.
Goucher led by as many as 16 points in the first half, but Marymount came back, closing the gap to six points (38-32) at halftime.
Boswell accounted for 11 of the first 17 points the Gophers scored in the second half and his lay-up with 13:08 provided Goucher with a 55-40 lead. The Saints (5-5) never got closer than to within 11 points the rest of the way.
The Gophers achieved a .525 shooting percentage tonight by going 32-for-61 from the field. They had a second double-figure scorer in Marcus Cotton (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook), who delivered 15 points off the bench.
Twelve different players hauled in at least one rebound for Goucher and Miguel Negron (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) was credited with eight assists.
Shaun Ingram captured scoring honors for Marymount with his 20-point, seven-rebound effort.
This was the 40th meeting in the all-time series between the two schools, which Goucher now leads 25-15. The only opponent the Gophers have defeated more times than Marymount during their 19-year existence is Gallaudet (31 times).
