TOWSON, Md. – Goucher opened a four-game homestand on a
successful note in the Sports & Recreation Center tonight,
turning back Drew, 78-67, to move into a tie with Moravian for
fifth place in the Landmark Conference.
In avenging a one-point loss to the Rangers earlier this month, the Gophers (5-12, 3-5 Landmark) took the lead for good tonight when Darrin Boswell (Nottingham, Md./Joppatowne) connected from three-point range with 6:13 left to play in the first half. Including Boswell's three-pointer, which put Goucher ahead 20-19, head coach Leonard Trevino's squad made four three-point baskets and outscored Drew, 22-7, over the final 6:13 of the opening period to open up a 39-26 advantage by halftime.
The Rangers (4-15, 2-6 Landmark) fell behind by as many as 18 points in the second half before closing to within eight points on a pair of free throws by Jay Nemeyer with 1:24 remaining.
Boswell surpassed 20 points in a game for the third time this season as he contributed 22 points to the victory. He was 7-for-13 from the field, including 5-for-11 on three-point attempts.
Marcus Cotton (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) supplied the Gophers with 13 points and Shane Yambor (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch) had 12 points to go along with a team-high nine rebounds.
Mike Mayes and Gerard Mullin shared scoring honors for Drew with 13 points apiece.
