WASHINGTON, D.C. – Goucher was victorious the last two times
it played Catholic in the DuFour Center, but the Cardinals made
certain that the streak didn't reach three games as they prevailed
on their home court tonight, 73-48, to bring the Gophers' 2008-09
season to a close.
The Cardinals, who had fourth place in the Landmark Conference and a berth in the conference's postseason tournament sewed up before the game, never trailed. The Gophers (6-17, 4-10 Landmark) managed only one point on a free throw by Micah Perry (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) on their first seven possessions and didn't score from the field until a lay-up by Perry after 3:48 had elapsed.
Catholic (17-8, 8-6 Landmark) assumed a double-digit lead for the first time when Jason Banzhaf landed a three-point basket exactly 6:00 into the contest, making the score 20-8. By the end of the first half, the Gophers trailed 42-25.
The Cardinals' lead fluctuated between 15 and 30 points throughout the second half.
Perry was the leading scorer for the Gophers. He was 8-for-16 from the field, including 2-for-5 from three-point range, in racking up 20 points.
Banzhaf, the leading scorer in the Landmark Conference at 21.1 points per game going in, was the Cardinals' top scorer with 22 points.
