TOWSON, Md. – Goucher scored 17 more points from the field
than Salisbury, but the Sea Gulls more than made up the difference
at the free-throw line on the way to a 76-68 triumph over the
Gophers tonight in the opening round of the 2008 Provident Pride of
Maryland Championship.
With the loss, head coach Leonard Trevino's squad drops into the tournament's consolation bracket and must win its next two games to finish in fifth place. In the consolation semifinals, the Gophers (0-2) will take on Frostburg St., which lost to Johns Hopkins, 69-66, in one of tonight's other first-round contests.
Even in the first half, which ended with the two teams deadlocked at 34-34, the Sea Gulls (1-3) went to the free-throw line 15 times and missed only twice. The Gophers, on the other hand, were 7-of-9 in the opening period and just 2-of-9 during the final 20:00 of play.
The lead changed hands six times in the second half before Salisbury went ahead to stay on a basket by Luther Weedon with 6:42 left to play. The rest of the way, the Sea Gulls made only three shots from the field, but went 14-of-16 at the charity stripe.
The 34 made free throws ties the single-game record for the tournament, which is now in its fourth year of existence.
Devin Jones of the Sea Gulls secured 14 of his game-high 21 points on free throws, breaking the tournament record for most free throws by an individual in a game.
Miguel Negron (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) knocked down a career-high 17 points to capture scoring honors for the Gophers. The senior guard was 7-for-14 from the field, including 3-for-9 from three-point range.
Micah Perry (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) came off Goucher's bench to score 11 points and Darrin Boswell II (Nottingham, Md./Joppatowne), who was an all-tournament selection as a junior a year ago, tallied 10 points.
