TOWSON, Md. – A running one-hander in the lane by
Miguel Negron (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) with just
1:04 left to play tonight put Goucher ahead of Maryland Bible for
the first time the entire second half. But before the Gophers could
celebrate their first victory of the season, they were going to
have to make a couple of stops on defense along with some free
throws.
They got their first stop when Darrin Boswell II (Nottingham, Md./Joppatowne) rebounded a missed jumper by Terry Hosely of the Eagles. Boswell was immediately fouled, and after missing his first attempt, he connected on the second to put the Gophers ahead 54-52.
Hosley missed another shot and Boswell again grabbed the defensive board and was fouled. This time, with :10 showing on the clock, the senior guard converted both attempts and Goucher was now up 56-52.
Hosley's tip-in with :02 remaining made it a two-point game, but two free throws by Negron with less than a second left to play closed out the scoring in the Gophers' 58-54 triumph over the Eagles (4-5).
Before making their final five free-throw attempts, the Gophers (1-5) were 8-of-19 at the charity stripe.
Hosley led all scorers, but he tallied 17 of his 21 points in the first half on 8-for-12 shooting from the field. In the second half, he was only 1-for-7 until his late follow.
Boswell supplied the Gophers with 12 points, and Nick DeSouza (Washington, D.C./Archbishop Spalding) and Amir Hakim (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City College) added 10 apiece.
Hakim also was credited with a career-high 13 rebounds, giving the senior center the first double-double of his career.
The Gophers led by as many as eight points in the first half before the Eagles reeled off 15 unanswered points over a span of 5:59. Hosley accounted for 11 points during the run.
Maryland Bible led 32-23 at halftime, but after Goucher scored the first nine points of the second period to pull into a 32-32 tie, neither team led by more than six points the rest of the way.
