SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Goucher's Darrin Boswell II (Nottingham, Md./Joppatowne) was 5-for-10 from three-point range on the way to a game-high 19-point performance tonight, but the three-pointer also seemed to be the favorite weapon of the Gophers' opponent: Wisconsin-Stout connected on 10 of the 20 shots it launched from behind the three-point stripe and earned a 70-59 victory at the 2008 Island Time Basketball Classic.
After Wisconsin-Stout stormed out to an early 14-6 advantage, Boswell drained three-pointers on back-to-back possessions to knock Goucher's deficit down to 16-12 in the sixth minute of the contest. But the senior guard wouldn't score another point and the Gophers (1-7) wouldn't make another three-pointer until the second half; the Blue Devils (3-6), on the other hand, made seven three-pointers in the opening period and enjoyed a 13-point lead at the break.
With his seventh double-digit scoring performance of the season, Boswell is now averaging 14.6 points per game. Goucher had a second double-figure scorer in Amir Hakim (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City College), who was 7-for-10 from the field and finished with 16 points.
The leading scorer for Wisconsin-Stout was Eric Hostetter with 13 points.
This was only the fifth game the Gophers have played outside the continental United States in their 19-year existence. They also played an exhibition against Sagrado Corazon during their trip to Puerto Rico.
