Three Double-Figure Scorers for Goucher in 70-64 Triumph
TOWSON, Md. — A three-point field goal by Micah
Perry (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) with 8:24 remaining
snapped a 51-51 tie and Goucher, which trailed Susquehanna by as
many as nine points in the first half, went on to down the
Crusaders, 70-64, tonight in the Decker Sports & Recreation
Center.
It was the Gophers' first win in five tries against Susquehanna since the formation of the Landmark Conference, although the Crusaders enjoy only a slim 5-4 advantage in the all-time series between the two schools.
The Gophers (3-8, 1-1 Landmark) were able to extend their lead to 65-57 when Tim Alexander (Hagerstown, Md./Williamsport) was fouled on a three-point attempt and made all three free throws with 2:12 left to play. The closest the Crusaders (7-6, 0-2 Landmark) were able to get after that was 65-61 on a basket by Spenser Spencer, but Goucher knocked down five free throws — three by Kyle Gladden (Baltimore, Md./Lansdowne) and two by Steve Musenga (Germantown, Md./Good Counsel) — over the final :46.
Spencer, the leading scorer in the Landmark Conference at 18.2 points per game going in, was held to four points.
Perry, who erupted for a career-high 30 points in one of the two games against Susquehanna in 2008-09, contributed 14 points to the victory. Gladden and Shane Yambor (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch) chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Gladden matched his career-high for rebounds in a game by hauling in 15 as the Gophers finished with a 45-39 edge on the boards.
Pat Bailey (Rockville, Md./Magruder) supplied the Gophers with eight points, all in the first half. He landed a shot from three-point range with 5:52 remaining before halftime to cap a 12-3 run that erased an 18-9 lead by Susquehanna.
Another three-pointer by Bailey put Goucher ahead 26-25, but Harvey Pannell's layup just before the buzzer allowed the Crusaders to walk off the court at the break leading 32-31.
