TOWSON, Md. — Goucher picked off the U.S. Merchant Marine
Academy once on a neutral court during the 1999-2000 season and one
time in Kings Point, N.Y., but entering today's Landmark Conference
game in the Decker Sports & Recreation Center, the Gophers were
0-2 all-time against the Mariners at home.
And now make that 0-3. In front of a crowd of 316 this afternoon, the Mariners (12-3, 4-1 Landmark) pinned a shocking 76-47 setback on head coach Leonard Trevino's Gophers.
Merchant Marine got on the scoreboard first on a jumper by Matt Hueber, went ahead to stay on a layup by Hueber just 2:09 into the contest and had its first double-digit lead after 10:19 on another Hueber layup.
Hueber and Jon Snead both scored nine points in the opening 20 minutes as the Mariners opened up a 39-20 advantage by the end of the first half.
The Gophers (4-10, 2-3 Landmark) never got closer than to within 17 points at any point in the second half.
Snead went on to finish with a game-high 21 points, while Heuber added just four points to his total in the second half. Chad Ray, who tied the SRC record by going 5-for-6 on three-point attempts, supplied the Mariners with 15 points.
Freshman forward Trae Lindsay (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco) captured scoring honors for Goucher by tallying 10 points, which matches his career-high for a game.
