far as making the Landmark Conference playoffs with a victory over
Susquehanna today and the Gophers were down to the Crusaders only
two points following a three-point basket by Dorian Green
(Baltimore, Md./Cardinal Gibbons) with 4:09 remaining.
The rest of the way, however, the Crusaders outscored the Gophers, 10-1, and they took over sole possession of fourth place in the Landmark Conference as a result of their 76-65 victory.
By making seven of their first 10 shots from the field, head coach Leonard Trevino's Gophers (6-13, 4-5 Landmark) built up an 18-10 advantage over the Crusaders after just 7:02. By halftime, Kyle Gladden (Baltimore, Md./Lansdowne) and Shane Yambor (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch) combined to score 26 points for Goucher, but Susquehanna managed to close the gap to a single point, 41-40.
Even though they couldn't shake the Gophers until the closing moments, the Crusaders (12-8, 5-4 Landmark) went ahead for good on a layup by Harvey Pannell 2:01 into the second half that made the score 46-45. Midway through the period, Susquehanna had expanded its lead to 57-51.
Following Green's three-pointer that allowed the Gophers to close to within 66-64, the Crusaders reeled off eight unanswered points starting with a free throw by Marcus Burke, then a three-point field goal by Spenser Spencer and two free throws from Bryan Majors before Hunter McKain's jumper with 1:07 remaining put Susquehanna up 74-64.
The Gophers ended a string of four empty possessions when Gladden sank a free throw with exactly 1:00 showing on the clock, but they wound up missing their final seven field goal attempts of the contest to finish with a .408 shooting percentage.
Gladden (17 points) and Yambor (15 points) were the top two scorers for Goucher. Micah Perry (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) added 12 points by making four three-pointers.
Burke achieved a double-double of 19 points and a career-high 18 rebounds for the Crusaders.
