Gladden Turns Out to Be Goucher's Leading Scorer, Rebounder
TOWSON, Md. — Because Goucher outscored McDaniel, 14-3, over
the final 7:37 of regulation, it seemed as though momentum might be
on the Gophers' side when the two teams headed for overtime locked
in a 53-53 tie this afternoon in the second of the two consolation
semifinals of the 2009 Pride of Maryland Championship presented by
M&T Bank.
The Gophers tallied the first two points of the five-minute extra session, assuming a 55-53 lead on a pair of free throws by Joel Smith (Nottingham, England/Cardinal Gibbons). But any momentum that they had going for them quickly reverted back to the Green Terror, who responded with a 9-2 run that helped them earn a 62-59 victory.
Michael Jarboe contributed eight points to McDaniel's decisive spurt, starting with a jumper that tied the score at 55-55. After the Gophers (0-2) regained the lead on a layup by Kyle Gladden (Baltimore, Md./Landsdowne), Jarboe put the Green Terror (1-1) ahead to stay by nailing a shot from three-point range.
McDaniel's very next possession also ended in a three-point basket by Jarboe, making the score 61-57.
Even though they left the court at halftime leading 24-23, the Gophers fell behind by as many as 13 points in the second half. It took a run of seven unanswered points that started with a three-pointer by Shane Yambor (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch) to reduce McDaniel's lead to 50-46 with 4:14 left to play.
Gladden's conventional three-point play with :55 remaining put Goucher up 53-52, but a free throw by Miguel Jones with :11 showing on the clock tied the score.
Jones led all scorers as he furnished the Green Terror with 25 points. Jarboe finished with 16 points.
Gladden was the leading scorer and rebounder for Goucher as he turned in a 17-point, eight-rebound performance. Micah Perry (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) came off the bench to score 14 points and Yambor produced 11 points.
This was only the second meeting between the Gophers and Green Terror during the tournament's five-year existence.
