Lindsay Rejects Four More Shots, Tallies Career-High 23 Points
HUNTINGDON, Pa. — Goucher and Juniata finished with identical shooting percentages in this afternoon's Landmark Conference game as both teams were 21-for-49 from the field. The Gophers made six 3-point attempts, two more than the Eagles, and head coach Leonard Trevino's squad was nearly perfect at the free-throw line.
Yet it was the home-standing Eagles who prevailed.
Although Goucher was 8-of-9 at the charity stripe, Juniata went to the line 26 times and converted 21 of its foul shots. The discrepancy in free-throw attempts played a huge role in the outcome, a 67-56 victory for the Eagles.
Juniata tallied the first seven points of the game, and even though the Gophers (2-8, 0-3 Landmark) managed to tie the score at 7-7, they never led the entire contest. By halftime, the Eagles (9-5, 2-1 Landmark) were up 34-19.
The closest Goucher got at any point in the second half was on a conventional three-point play by Marcus Cotton (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) with 2:12 remaining, which made the score 64-56.
Trae Lindsay (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco) led all scorers as he furnished the Gophers with a career-high 23 points. The sophomore post player was 10-for-13 from the field and made all three of his free throws, plus he was credited with five rebounds, two assists, two steals and four blocked shots.
Lindsay has now blocked at least one opponent shot in nine consecutive games and has registered multiple rejections in seven games so far this season. The four blocks today raise his 2010-11 total to 25, leaving him only six away from setting a new single-season school record.
Colby Giacubeno (Perry Hall) added 15 points by going 5-for-10 from 3-point range.
Four of Juniata's five starters scored in double figures: Bruce Knowles led the way with 14 points and Dan Sekulski tallied 13 points, while Austin Ankney and Brian Scholly chipped in with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
