Gophers Can't Overcome Early 16-0 Run by Royals

Brooks, Harris Combine for 22 Points in 91-62 Setback
SCRANTON, Pa. — The 2-0 lead Goucher gained on a basket by Shane Yambor (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch) just 53 seconds into this evening's Landmark Conference game against Scranton couldn't hold up against the response of 16 consecutive points by the Royals, who went on to earn a 91-62 victory over the Gophers.
Tim Lavelle tallied the final nine points of the 16-0 run that provided the Royals (9-4, 2-0 Landmark) with a 14-point cushion less than five minutes into the contest. Scranton's biggest advantage of the first half came when Ross Danzig landed a shot from 3-point range, making the score 39-18 with 4:37 remaining in the period.
At halftime, Scranton enjoyed a 42-25 lead.
The Gophers (3-9, 0-2 Landmark) closed to within 15 points twice in the second half, but also fell behind by as many as 36 points on two separate occasions.
Luke Hawk, who came off the bench for the Royals and played only 17 minutes, led all scorers as he finished with 16 points. Tommy Morgan contributed 13 points to the victory and Lavelle ended up with a dozen points.
Goucher had a pair of double-digit scorers in freshmen guards Damon Brooks (Takoma Park, Md./Springbrook) and Richard Harris (Clinton, Md./Surrattsville). Brooks was 5-for-8 from the field and made both of his free-throw attempts to furnish the Gophers with 12 points, while Brooks chipped in with 10 points.
The Royals limited freshman guard Alex Noble (Clinton, Md./Surrattsville), who was coming off a record-setting 40-point performance against Rutgers-Camden on Monday, to eight points.
Scranton out-rebounded head coach Leonard Trevino's squad, 55-35.
