Gophers Come Up Three Points Shy of First Landmark Win
TOWSON, Md. — On a night when Goucher's Trae Lindsay (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco) came up one blocked shot shy of a triple-double, the Gophers came up three points short of their first Landmark Conference victory of the season. Even though the junior post player scored 23 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and rejected nine shots, head coach Leonard Trevino's squad suffered a 68-65 setback to Moravian tonight in the Decker Sports & Recreation Center.
The nine blocked shots is a new single-game school record and the most by any player in the history of the Decker SRC. Lindsay already holds the school records for blocks in a season (50) and every time he swats an opposing player's shot, he adds to his all-time leading career total, which, including the nine tonight, stands at 122.
Goucher trailed by 10 points before the game was even four minutes old as Moravian, after spotting the Gophers (3-15, 0-8 Landmark) the first three points of the contest, reeled off 13 consecutive points to go up 13-3. The largest advantage the Greyhounds (10-9, 5-3 Landmark) enjoyed in the first half was the 38-21 cushion Kenny Gula provided them by sinking a pair of free throws with 3:26 remaining in the period.
By halftime, however, the Gophers had made up five points and trailed only 41-30.
It wasn't until Damon Brooks (Takoma Park, Md./Springbrook) knocked down a 3-point field goal with 8:13 left to play that Goucher was able to go ahead for the first time since the opening moments of the contest. Brooks' 3-pointer put the Gophers up 55-54 and then Linsday capped a 15-3 spurt by the home team by scoring in the paint and extending the lead to 57-54.
Over the final 5:08, the score was tied on three separate occasions and the lead changed hands three times. Garrett Johnson's layup with 4:38 remaining broke a 59-59 tie, but proved to be Moravian's final field goal of the contest. Lindsay tied the score at 62-62 when he converted a layup with 2:06 showing on the clock.
A free throw by Marcus Cotton (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) provided the Gophers with a 63-62 lead with :52 remaining, but just 17 seconds later, D.J. Strayhorn sank two foul shots to put the Greyhounds back in front.
Jeff Cullinan's two free throws with :10 left to play made it a two-possession game and all the Gophers could do is get two points closer on a tip-in by Lindsay with under three seconds remaining.
Brooks and Cotton backed up Lindsay's season-high 23-point outing by supplying the Gophers with 15 and 14 points, respectively.
Johnson furnished the Greyhounds with a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds.
The only triple-double in the history of Goucher's men's basketball program was attained by Trevor Quinn when he finished with 11 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists in a 70-50 triumph over Salisbury on Jan. 12, 2005.
