Gophers Drop Ninth Straight in Series with Catholic
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher closed out its 2011-12 campaign tonight by bowing to Catholic, 84-51, in a Landmark Conference game played in the Decker Sports & Recreation Center.
The Gophers got on the scoreboard first thanks to a layup
by Damon Brooks
(Takoma Park,
Md./Springbrook) just 11 seconds
into the contest, but the Cardinals (17-8, 7-7 Landmark) answered
with six straight points, going ahead to stay on a 3-point basket
by Steve Limberiou.
Catholic's lead reached double digits for the first time on a
layup by Jared Prince that made the score 21-10 with 8:36 remaining
before halftime.
Catholic, which has now won nine straight games in the series between the two schools, left the court at the end of the first half ahead by 20 points at 43-23.
The Gophers (4-20, 1-13 Landmark) trailed by at least 18 points the entire second half.
Four of Catholic's five starters contributed at least 10 points to the victory: Limberiou led the way with 21 points, followed by Shawn Holmes with 16 points, Darrell Carroll with 11 and Billy Donovan with 10. Pete Schramm came off the bench to score 18 points.
Brooks supplied the Gophers with 20 points. Trae Lindsay (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco) added 12 points, plus he also broke the single-season school record for blocked shots he established in 2010-11. The junior post player rejected five shots, boosting his total for the season to 54, which is four more than he had as a sophomore.
Although the Gophers shot 30.8 percent from the field
during the contest, they were just 1-for-21 on 3-point
attempts.
