TOWSON, Md. – The Goucher College Men's Basketball team (0-12, 0-2 Landmark) fell to the Rangers of Drew University (8-4, 2-0 Landmark), 82-59, Saturday afternoon in the Decker Sports and Recreation Center in Landmark Conference Action.
In the first half, the Rangers jumped out to a 10-0 lead to open the game, and never trailed throughout the first 20 minutes of play. At the break, the Rangers held a 45-26 lead on the Gophers, as Drew shot over 53 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes (compared to 25.8 percent for Goucher).
To open the second half, Drew quickly extended their lead out to 49-30 in the first four minutes of play. But, the Gophers went on a tear over the next three minutes, as they sliced the Drew lead down to 49-41 after an 11-0 run that was punctuated by a jumper by senior Elliott Wiley (Baltimore, Md.).
But, Drew quickly extinguished the Goucher run with a 17-3 spurt that put the Rangers up for good with six minutes left at 66-44. From there, Drew rolled down the stretch, improving to 2-0 in the Landmark with the road victory over the Gophers.
Overall for Goucher in the defeat, Wiley led the Gophers with 14 points and two assists, making 6-of-7 free throws. The first-year duo of Jacob Smith (Callaway, Va.) and Devon Esslinger (Las Cruces, N.M.) tallied 10 rebounds, apiece, for Goucher, as Smith scored nine points and Esslinger added eight points. Meanwhile, from the bench, first-year Nate Kaniut (Arlington, Va.) tallied seven points and two rebounds.
Leading Drew in the win was guard Riley Collins, who finished with 21 points.
Goucher returns to play on Wednesday, as they travel to Juniata for a Landmark Conference road tilt. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
