First-year forward Jacob Smith (Callaway, Va.) of the Goucher College men's basketball team was named the Landmark Conference's Rookie of the Year on Wednesday afternoon, as the conference announced their All-Landmark Teams for the 2017-18 season.
The Rookie of the Year award is a historic one for Smith, as he becomes the first Goucher men's basketball player to win an individual Landmark Conference postseason award in program history.
The program's first conference Rookie of the Year ever, Smith is also the first Gopher to win an individual conference award since Garrett Smith was named the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Player of the Year after the 2004-05 season.
In 2017-18, Smith finished the year averaging an even 10 points a game, while pulling down 6.3 rebounds a contest. He also dished out 49 total assists, had 10 steals and eight blocks, as well.
Smith scored in double-figures 11 different times throughout the course of the season, hitting his season-high mark on February 20th at Elizabethtown when he poured in 20 points. He also posted a pair of double-doubles on the year: first in the opening game of the season (and his collegiate debut) against Wilson on Nov. 15 (10 points, 11 rebounds), then against Moravian on Jan. 24 (16 points, 11 rebounds).
Smith, who posted double-digit rebounding efforts in four different games, started and played in all 24 games on the year for Goucher, as well. He finished the season eighth in the Landmark Conference in both total defensive rebounds (122) and total rebounds (150) and ninth in both rebounds per game (6.3) and minutes per game (32.3).
