BALTIMORE, Md. – The Goucher College men's golf team has been tabbed as the Landmark Conference preseason favorite according to the coaches poll announced on Thursday.
The Gophers, who garnered six of the eight first-place votes to be one vote shy of an unanimous pick, earned 68 points to finish first and ahead of Drew University (48 points) and Catholic University of America (42 points), who each received the other two first-place nods. The University of Scranton (41 points), Moravian College (31 points), Susquehanna University (21 points), Juniata College (12 points) and Elizabethtown College (9 points) rounded out the eight-team poll.
Now in its third season, Goucher has been the only name etched on the championship plaque with the team looking for its third-straight title and berth in the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships. The Gophers won the Landmark Conference Fall Preview on October 5 by one stroke over Scranton with a score of 309 thanks to all five competitors finishing in the Top-8 individually in the one-round event.
Julian Gonzalez (Heredia, Costa Rica/Berkeley Academy) finished second with a 76, Evan Yue (Beijing, China/IMG Academy) finished fourth with a score of 77 while Nick Fisher (Fishers, Ind./Fishers), Steph Lee (Manalapan, N.J./St. John Vianney) and Roberto Mikse (Fort Worth, Texas/Jim McClean Junior Academy) finished tied for eighth with a 78 at the fall preview.
Six Gophers have all-conference honors in their two years in Baltimore. Gonzalez and Yue earned first-team recognition while Lee and Fisher nabbed second-team selections in 2019. In the inaugural championships, Lee and Mikse garnered first-team honors while Yue and Joe Burns (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) were named to the second team.
Goucher opens the spring portion of its schedule at the Marlin Invitational on March 21-22 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The Landmark Conference Men's Golf Championships are April 25-26 at the Scotch Valley Country Club in Holidaysburg, Pennsylvania where the Gophers won the conference's fall preview.
