Matt Shur Named Men's and Women's Golf Coach
TOWSON, Md. - Goucher College Director of Athletics Andrew Wu announced Monday that Matt Shur has been named as the head coach for the Gopher men's and women's golf programs. He will officially begin in mid-August.
"I am thrilled to lead both the men and women's golf team here at Goucher College. I would like to thank President Kent Devereaux , Andrew Wu, Andrea Ricketts-Preston, and Jan Jedlicka for the opportunity to do so.," said Shur, a standout for the men's golf team at nearby Stevenson University from 2016-20. "It has always been a dream of mine to coach the game that I fell in love with. I am lucky to take over a program that has already had waves of success through former Coach Hunter Brown. "
"I'm thrilled Coach Shur will be leading our golf programs forward and working with Coach Jedlicka this year. Matt is an extremely promising young coach whose passion for golf and the Division III experience came through during his interviews," said Wu. "As we look to continue to build upon the immediate success of our golf teams upon their inception five years ago, Matt brings a fantastic competitive background and skillset to our team."
Shur enjoyed a stellar four-year career for the Mustangs playing for head coach Chris Ramer. He ranks seventh in program history with a career scoring average of 78.8. In 2018 Shur earned MAC Commonwealth First Team All-Conference honors as he finished tied for third at the conference championship to lead the Mustangs to their third straight MAC Commonwealth title. Shur was also a MAC Commonwealth Second Team performer as a freshman in 2017, placing ninth. During his career, Stevenson captured three straight MAC Commonwealth titles from 2017-19 before the 2020 conference championship was cancelled in Shur's senior season. Shur was a two-time team MVP for head coach Chris Ramer.
As a senior Shur earned DIII Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar honors and was also a Middle Atlantic Conference All-Academic Team member in 2018.
Shur comes to Goucher from Hartefeld National Golf Club in Avondale, Pennsylvania, where he served as the assistant golf professional since 2021. Prior to that, he worked as assistant pro shop manager at Talamore Country Club in Ambler, Pennsylvania.
"I can not wait to bring an exciting style of coaching to our golf program, and elevate our student athletes to their highest standards. My goal is to keep the game fun, excel in the classroom and get 1% better everyday. The journey to be great begins today," said Shur.
A native of Glenside, Pennsylvania, Shur graduated from Stevenson in 2020 with a degree in Business Administration.
Shur takes the reins of Gopher golf programs that have enjoyed success since their first season in 2017-18. Goucher's men's team captured three straight Landmark Conference championships from 2018-20, the first three seasons of the program, and made NCAA appearances in 2018 and 2019. The Gopher women finished second in the Landmark Conference in the spring of 2021.
