BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Goucher spotted Moravian a 4-1 lead through
one period today and then held the Greyhounds to only one
additional goal the rest of the way to secure an 8-5 victory and
move into a three-way tie for second place in the Landmark
Conference.
The Gophers (7-4, 2-1 Landmark) got on the scoreboard first on a goal by Sam Fitzpatrick (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) 2:24 into the contest, but the Greyhounds responded with four unanswered goals – two by David Forte and one apiece from Jason Tosches and David Bennett.
Moravian's three-goal advantage was sliced to one when Fitzpatrick and Jake Fratella (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) scored on man-up opportunities for Goucher :36 apart in the second quarter. After an unassisted goal by Max Walters (Rocky River, Ohio/St. Ignatius) midway through the period deadlocked the score at 4-4, the Gophers went ahead to stay when Rory Averett (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock North) tallied his team-leading 26th goal of the season with 4:57 remaining before halltime.
An extra-man goal by Kyle Boncaro (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) with :54 left in the second quarter provided Goucher with a 6-4 lead at the break.
The only scoring in the third period was an extra-man goal by Robert Devine that allowed the Greyhounds to close to within 6-5, but that proved to be Moravian's lone goal over the final 48:21.
With the win, head coach Kyle Hannan's squad moved into a tie with Merchant Marine and Scranton for second place in the Landmark Conference, a half-game in back of Drew.
