EDITOR'S NOTE: This is the first in a series of stories about Goucher student-athletes and their experiences while completing their study abroad requirement. It was written by Melissa Joseph, a freshman on the field hockey team, who interviewed her subject while he was in Australia.
Nathan Wilinski is a junior attackman on the Goucher men's lacrosse team. Through the institution's study abroad program, he spent the fall semester studying at the University of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland.
"So far, I've loved my experience abroad," Wilinski said. "I really do like it in Australia and I'm already exited to come back and visit when it's over."
Through his time "Down Under", Wilinski was able to keep in touch with his team captains and close teammates. The time difference does make difficult to communicate with everyone back in the United States, but he was still able to share some amazing experiences with his teammates.
With the 2016 lacrosse season quickly approaching, Wilinski managed to stay in shape while abroad. Whether it was going to the gym, running on a scenic trail, or picking up a lacrosse stick, he focused on getting better even if it was on a different continent.
For Wilinksi, the study abroad experience has been one to remember.
"You really learn a lot about the rest of the world when you leave the United States and travel. It teaches independence and life skills as you are so far away from home," he commented. "I couldn't imagine studying abroad anywhere else."
