For the first time in his career, senior goalie Matt Messerle (Limerick, Pa.) of the Goucher College men's lacrosse team was named the Landmark Conference's Defensive Athlete of the Week for the period ending February 18 on Monday.
Messerle earned the first Landmark Defensive Athlete of the Week award of the season for his performance on Sunday in the cage in the Gophers' 10-5 win over Hood on Sunday.
In the win, Messerle matched a career-high by making 12 saves, as he kept Hood off the scoreboard well into the third quarter in the contest. In the first half, alone, Messerle made six saves, as the Gophers went into halftime up, 5-0, on the visiting Blazers. Messerle also had four ground balls and a forced turnover in the win, as well.
Messerle and the rest of the Goucher College men's lacrosse team returns to action on Wednesday, as they host nationally-ranked Gettysburg at Beldon Field beginning at 4 p.m.
