Senior Matt Messerle (Limerick, Pa.) of the men's lacrosse team was dominant yet again in goal for the Gophers on Saturday against Scranton, as Goucher captured a 12-10 win at home in their 2018 Landmark Conference opener.
For his efforts, Messerle has been named the Goucher College Athlete of the Week for the period ending March 25.
Against Scranton, Messerle stopped 16 shots in net, as Goucher collected their first win over the visiting Royals since 2014 on Saturday. Messerle made four saves in each quarter of the match, including two critical stops in the final minutes of action that extinguished a Scranton rally late.
For the season, Messerle has already made a Landmark Conference high 117 saves, posting a save percentage of 57.6, which is the second highest mark in the conference. He also has a goals-against average of 8.86, which is the third-best mark in the Landmark to date, as well.
Messerle and the rest of the Goucher men's lacrosse team (who is 6-4 overall) return to action on Saturday, as they travel to Elizabethtown for a Landmark Conference showdown. Face-off is set for 1 p.m.
