Our second All-Goucher Team selection for to be announced is men's lacrosse senior Matt Messerle (Limerick, Pa.), who in 2018 was one of the catalysts for a resurgence by the Gophers program on his way to earning All-Goucher Second Team honors for the athletics year.
Messerle, the Gophers' primary goalie all season long, was one of the leaders of a team that won double-digit games for the first time in six seasons, on their way to clinching their first bid to the Landmark Conference Playoffs in four years after finishing the season with a 10-7 overall mark, 4-2 in the Landmark.
Messerle, who went on to earn All-Landmark Conference Second Team honors at his position for the first time in his career, posted a banner final season in the Gopher program in 2018.
Starting all 17 matches, he made a Landmark Conference-best 177 saves, while posting a saves percentage of 56.7 (second best in the Landmark). With a goals-against average of 8.42 (third best in the conference), Messerle made double-digit saves in seven matches throughout the course of the year.
He, however, had his best performances when Goucher needed them the most.
First, against Scranton on March 24, Messerle stopped 16 shots to preserve a 12-10 win for the Gophers. Then, at home against rival Catholic on Apr. 18, he made 17 saves to clinch a 6-5 win for Goucher.
The victories for Goucher over both Scranton and Catholic marked the first time since 2014 that the Gophers had knocked off both the Royals and the Cardinals in the same season, and catapulted Goucher back to the Landmark Conference playoffs as the number-three seed.
Messerle, who was named the Landmark's Defensive Athlete of the Week once (Feb. 19) and the Goucher Athlete of the Week twice (Mar. 26, Apr. 23) during the course of the year, graduated from Goucher late last month with a degree in Business.
The third All-Goucher Second Team selection will be announced on Wednesday at 12 p.m. For more on the All-Goucher Team, click here.
