TOWSON, Md. -- Twelve different players either scored at least one goal or were credited with one or more assists -- and one tied the school record for most goals in a game -- as Goucher overwhelmed Gallaudet, 12-0, today in the opening round of the Goucher College Soccer Classic.
The win was the Gophers' 10th straight in the all-time series with the Bison (0-1).
The game wasn't even five minutes old before the Gophers (1-0) got on the scoreboard on the first of two goals Chris Herting (Chalfont, PA/Germantown Academy) would tally in the contest. A successful penalty kick by Tim McMullen (Millersville, MD/Old Mill) in the eighth minute extended Goucher's lead to 2-0.
The Gophers struck for four goals in a span of less than 12 minutes in stretching their advantage to 6-0 by the end of the first half. A goal by Dan Brody (Stonington, CT/Stonington) at 17:58 was followed by three consecutive goals off the foot of Andrew Bull (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks West), the first one at 23:40 and then at 24:51 and 29:42.
Having already accomplished a "hat trick" in the very first game of his collegiate career, Bull went on to score a fourth goal, one with 27:30 remaining that boosted Goucher's lead to 11-0. He's only the fourth player in the history of the school's men's soccer program to tally four goals in a game, and the first to do so since Radcliffe Roye did against Dickinson in 1995.
Julien Greco (Shutesbury, MA/St. Georges School) supplied the Gophers with a pair of goals in the second half and David Brodian (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. Hebron), Herting and Eddie McMullen (Millersville, MD/Old Mill) all scored once.
Eight of Goucher's 12 goals were assisted, but the only player to pick up more than one assist was Nat Keller (Evanston, IL/Evanston Twp.). He was awarded an assist on one of Bull's goals in the first half and the one by Broadian that opened the scoring in the second half.
The Gophers finished with a 48-1 edge in shots.
