Rosse Offers Insurance After Goals by Lais, Bull in First Half
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Goucher defeated McDaniel in the sport of men's soccer for the first time since 1993 today by taking a 2-0 lead in the first half on goals by Elijah Lais (Grantsville, Md./Northern Garrett) and Andrew Bull (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) and then turning to Evan Rosse (Concord, Mass./Bedford) for some insurance.
In the game's 74th minute, the Green Terror (2-3) closed to within 2-1 on a successful penalty kick by Timothy Wineke, but Rosse restored Goucher's lead to two by heading in a pass from Bull at 86:25 before tallying his team-leading third goal of the young season at 89:16 to close out the scoring in a 4-1 victory for the Gophers.
In ending a 10-game losing streak in the all-time series between the in-state rivals, the Gophers (3-1) finished with a narrow 16-15 advantage in shots. McDaniel was awarded 12 corner kicks during the contest, twice as many as Goucher.
Although Wineke ended his bid for a shutout by beating him on the penalty kick, senior goalkeeper Justin Holbrook (Claymont, Del./Wilmington Friends School) of the Gophers finished with six saves.
