Mariners Avoid OT, Possible Upset by Gophers

Rosse Creates 1-1 Tie with Team-Leading Sixth Goal at 66:27

TOWSON, Md. — Goucher was less than a minute from taking Merchant Marine, which is still in contention for the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Landmark Conference postseason tournament, into overtime when Benjamin Inouye scored his second goal of the contest to lift the Mariners past the Gophers, 2-1, this afternoon on Beldon Field.

Inouye, who put the Mariners (15-2, 6-1 Landmark) ahead 1-0 with his first goal at 62:39, tallied the game-winner with just :53 remaining in regulation. The goal was set up by Clint Foster, who served the ball from just inside midfield to Inouye, who one-touched the ball just out of the reach of goalkeeper Justin Holbrook (Claymont, Del./Wilmington Friends School).

Holbrook finished with five saves on the 18 shots the Mariners attempted.

The Gophers (6-10-1, 0-6 Landmark) trailed 1-0 for less than four minutes. At 66:27, Evan Rosse (Concord, Mass./Bedford) notched his team-leading sixth goal of the season when he headed in a corner kick by Elijah Lais (Grantsville, Md./Northern Garrett).
