5-0 Setback Keeps Goucher from Fifth Straight Win in Series
CHESTERTOWN, Md. — Eleven different Goucher players got off shots — a total of 21 — but not one of them was able to get even one of his attempts past either of the goalkeepers who saw action for Washington (Md.) tonight.
Goucher's opponent had no such trouble: 10 shots in the first half produced four goals, including three within a span of less than two minutes. The Shoremen (2-3) added another goal in the 63rd minute of the second period to complete a 5-0 triumph over head coach Bryan Laut's Gophers.
Chris Phipps was in goal for the Shoremen in the first half and he made saves on seven of the 11 shots he faced. Tyler Cabot took over for Phipps to begin the second half and kept the Gophers (2-4) from getting on the scoreboard by turning away five shots.
Chris Nardo tallied three of Washington's five goals, including the one just 3:17 into the contest that provided the home team with a quick 1-0 advantage. Only :17 separated the unassisted goal by Sam Wild that made the score 2-0 and Nardo's second goal of the contest, breaking a 13-year-old Centennial Conference record for the fastest consecutive goals by the same team.
Colin Kidwell knocked in a rebound off the post at 22:00 to give the Shoremen a 4-0 lead that they maintained until Nardo completed his hat trick at 62:33.
The loss ended Goucher's four-game winning streak in the
series between the two in-state rivals.
