TOWSON, Md. — Tate Becker (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch), who supplied the game-winning goal in Goucher's 2-0 victory at regionally-ranked Scranton on Saturday, has been announced as the Landmark Conference's Offensive Athlete of the Week for Oct. 6-12.
Becker becomes the first men's soccer player to earn the conference's weekly offensive honor since Elijah Lais was recognized on Oct. 3, 2011. This is the second weekly award for the program this fall, as Nicholas Stolarz (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) was named the top defensive athlete on Sept. 8.
Goucher came into Saturday's matchup having never won a road match in three previous tries against the first place Royals. Becker quickly got the Gophers on their way to changing that with a strike just 8:09 into the opening half. The goal, his first of the season, was a low line drive from 20 yards out near the center of the box.
Scranton, which is ranked seventh in the Mid-Atlantic region by the NSCAA, dropped to 9-3-1 after the loss. Goucher earned its second conference win this season and now stands at 6-5 overall heading into next Saturday's 1 p.m. home matchup against Drew.
Becker is the sixth Gopher across all fall sports to receive a weekly award from the Landmark in 2014.
