TOWSON, Md. — One of the three saves Goucher's Daniel Hendry (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) made in the first half of today's game against the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy was on a shot by Gavin Yingling. The freshman goalkeeper also turned away a penalty kick by the leading scorer in the Landmark Conference in the 49th minute to keep the contest scoreless.
Yingling, who had scored at least one goal in seven of the eight games the Mariners had played before today, eventually knocked one past Hendry to put his team up 2-0, which turned out to be the final score.
Yingling, who came in having scored eight goals so far this season, was selected to take the penalty kick and aimed for the lower right corner, but Hendry dove to his left and deflected the ball out of harm's way.
Henrdy's counterpart, Cory Maier, was credited with one save in the first 45 minutes and then a second when stopped an attempt by Ryan Belluch (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) in the 57th minute.
The Mariners (7-2, 1-1 Landmark) grabbed a 1-nil lead when a a blocked shot was deflected to the middle of the field where Michael Mischler was able to knock it in past Hendry at 61:41. Yingling's ninth goal of the season at 71:50 was set up by Michael Heckmuller.
The Gophers (2-5-1, 0-2 Landmark) conclude a three-game home stand on Tuesday when they welcome Cairn to Beldon Field at 4 p.m.
