IMMACULATA, Pa. - A successful penalty kick by host Immaculata with eight minutes left in regulation proved to be the difference, as the host Mighty Macs knocked off the Goucher College men's soccer team, 2-1, on Saturday.
With the defeat, the Gophers fell to 0-5-1 overall on the year, while Immaculata evened their record to 3-3-1 with the win.
In the opening frame of the contest, Goucher was aggressive all half on the offensive end, eventually outshooting Immaculata, 9-5, in the first 45 minutes of action. The Gophers, however, could not score a goal, as Immaculata cracked the scoreless tie with a tally in the 29th minute to take a 1-0 lead.
That 1-0 lead held through the end of the first half and into the first 12 minutes of the second half, where Goucher caught a break.
In the 57th minute, the Gophers were awarded a penalty kick after a foul in the box, and junior Brandon Cohen (Redondo Beach, Calif.) converted the chance, tying the match up at 1-1 in the process. For Cohen, it was his third goal of the season to date.
The remainder of the half saw Goucher control play, but once again, the Gophers were unable to score a goal, despite outshooting Immaculata, 9-1, in the frame. Things came to a head in the 82nd minute, as Immaculata was the recipient of a penalty kick after a Gopher foul and converted on the chance, giving the Mighty Macs a 2-1 lead late.
In the 88th minute, the Gophers fired their final shot of the match, but it sailed right, as Immaculata hung on over the final moments to take the one score victory.
Overall in the defeat, Goucher had the advantage in the stat sheet in both shots (18-6) and corner kicks (7-4).
The Goucher College men's soccer team will look to bounce back on Tuesday, as they travel to McDaniel. Kick-off is set for 4 p.m.
