BALTIMORE, MD - The Goucher College Gophers (3-2-3 overall) hosted the Widener University Pride (1-5-1 overall) in a deadlocked competition on Beldon Field Saturday afternoon.
The Pride opened the half with two shots in the first two minutes, putting pressure on the Gophers backline early. Senior goalkeeper, Ale Sternini recorded his first save just under five minutes in the competition. The early pressure from Widener paid off, finishing a shot off a corner, to give the Pride the lead 9:49 into the competition.
It was not until 20 minutes into the competition that Andres Aristimuno forced the other goalkeeper to make a save. With that, the teams traded shots, while the pride took the early look into halftime.
Despite the early efforts of in the second half resulting in a corner for the Gophers, the Pride turned the tables, earning three offensive opportunities. Joel Lukoo earned the ball back for the Gophers from a goalkick, and brought the game to 1-1.
For the remainder of the competition, the teams traded shots, with Goucher having the edge and ending the half with two near attempts by Aristimuno.
The Pride outshot the Gophers 12-9, with this edge coming after nine attempts shots in the first half. They also earned one more corner kick (6-5). Sternini earned two saves, one in each half, and with 87:02 in net.
Goucher goes into an off week, before they return to action against Landmark opponent Drew University on Saturday, September 27th at 3:30pm for the second game of the doubleheader.
