MADISON, NJ - The Goucher College Gophers (4-2-3 overall, 1-0-0 conference) traveled to open Landmark Conference play against the Rangers of Drew University (5-2-1 overall; 0-1-0 conference). With goals that opened and closed the game, the Gophers came out on top 2-1.
The first action of the game came from senior, Andres Aristimuno, giving Goucher the lead just 3:37 into the competition off a throw in from first year, Declan Ritchotte. After that, the Rangers offense was full force recording three shots in three minutes. Mzwandile Honde countered, notching his first shot attempt (18:23). The Rangers remained on the attack, recording nine shots in the first half, but they were unable to beat senior goalkeeper, Ale Sternini. The Gophers led at half 1-0.
Drew's offensive efforts paid off early in the second half, finding the back of the net after multiple corner kicks (49:12). The Gophers found Aristimuno for two shots, both requiring the Ranger goalkeeper, Friedhoff, to make a save. The teams traded possessions and shots, until the 78 minute, when junior Drew Gentile was able to beat the keeper, from a pass from Rhys Petrovia. Similar to the first Gophers goal, Drew rallied with four shots in the next couple of minutes, and despite outshooting the Gophers in the second half, they were not able to break Goucher's defense.
The Rangers outshot the Gophers 22-8, earning 10 corners to the Goucher's two. Aristimuno led the Gophers with three shots in the competition. Sternini recorded seven saves in 90 minutes of play.
Goucher men's soccer travels to Washington Adventist for a Tuesday night match, set to kick off at 7pm. They return home for Blue & Gold weekend (October 4th), where they will see Scranton in the second match of a Beldon Field double-header, which will start at 3:30.
