BALTIMORE, MD – The Goucher College men's soccer team (5-3-3 overall; 1-1 conference) hosted the No. 15 University of Scranton Royals (7-0-3 overall; 2-0 conference) as a part of Blue & Gold Weekend. The nationally ranked Royals secured a 2-0 victory to remain undefeated on the season.
Scranton set the tone early forcing Goucher goalkeeper, Ale Sternini, to make his first save just two minutes into the match. The Royals followed with a flurry of pressure, earning four corners in just as many minutes. Goucher's first chance came in the 14th minute on a corner kick, but Scranton quickly countered by four additional shots. Goucher remained on the defensive for the remainder of the half, to keep the Gophers within reach at the break.
The Royals finally broke through in the 56th minute and doubled their advantage just ten minutes later. Goucher responded with a late push, highlighted by two shots from Bryan Machado and a final attempt by Drew Gentile, but the Royals' defense held firm to preserve the clean sheet.
The Royals outshot the Gophers 25-3, and held a 7-3 edge in corners. Sternini finished with 10 saves in goal for the Gophers.
Goucher return to action against Landmark Conference opponent, Catholic University, on Tuesday, October 7th for a 7pm kickoff on Beldon field.
