BALTIMORE, MD — The Goucher College men's soccer team (5-4-3, 1-2 Landmark) dropped a hard-fought 3-1 decision to Catholic University (6-0-5, 1-0-2 Landmark) on Tuesday evening at Beldon Field.
After an even start featuring back-and-forth possession, the Cardinals broke through in the 26th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Just minutes later, Catholic doubled its advantage following a rebound that found the back of the net despite an initial save from Ale Sternini.
Coming out of halftime, the Gophers generated early momentum with two quick shots and a corner kick, but an own goal off a deflected corner extended the Cardinals' lead to 3-0 in the 52nd minute.
Goucher responded with persistence, earning its lone goal of the evening when Bryan Machado connected off a feed from Joel Lukoo to make it 3-1. The Gophers continued to press late, but Catholic's defense held firm to secure the win.
The Cardinals outshot Goucher 21-11, though both sides finished even in corner kicks. Tiem Kuiy led the Gophers with three shots, while Sternini recorded nine saves in a strong 90-minute effort between the posts.
Goucher will look to bounce back in conference play this weekend when it hosts Juniata College on Saturday, October 11, at 3:30 p.m. on Beldon Field.
