BALTIMORE, MD - The Goucher men's soccer team (8-6-3 overall; 4-4 conference) celebrated their Senior Day in style on Saturday afternoon, defeating Elizabethtown College (3-10-4 overall; 0-5-3 conference) 2-0 to clinch a Landmark Conference playoff berth.
The Gophers recorded an early attempt with a header from Jonathan Adima off the corner kick from Declan Ritchotte. Despite several additional attempts for the Gophers, the Blue Jays countered with a dangerous look in the 18th minute that forced a save from Ale Sternini. Goucher's pressure finally broke through in the 43rd minute when Anthony Ketelsen found the back of the net, finishing off a double assist from Aj Landy and Ritchotte.
Elizabethtown opened the second half with a series of opportunities, but Goucher's defense held firm. The Gophers responded with four consecutive corner kicks before regaining control of possession. In the 80th minute, Andres Aristimuno doubled Goucher's advantage, scoring off a setup from Drew Gentile. Sternini kept the shutout alive, with a save in the final 20 seconds of the game.
The Gophers held the edge over the Blue Jays in shots (16-14), and had more corner kick opportunities (10-4). Aristimuno led the offensive charge for the Gophers with five shots, including three on target. Sternini played the full 90 minutes and collected seven saves, while recording his seventh shutout of the season.
Goucher travels to Susquehanna on Tuesday, October 28th for their final game of the regular season, set to kick off at 7pm.
