SELINSGROVE, PA – The Goucher College men's soccer team (9-6-3 overall; 5-4 conference) traveled to face the River Hawks of Susquehanna University (5-10-3 overall; 1-5-3 conference) on Tuesday night. An early first-half goal proved to be the difference, lifting the Gophers to a 1-0 victory and securing a home playoff berth.
Susquehanna wasted no time on the attack, putting a shot on target just two minutes into the match. After a flurry of early attempts from the River Hawks, the Gophers capitalized on their first opportunity. A saved strike from Andres Aristimuño set up Bryan Machado, who buried the rebound for what would stand as the game-winning goal. The remainder of the half featured an even exchange, with both sides generating chances.
Goucher opened the second half with renewed energy, firing two shots in the first two minutes. As the half progressed, play shifted into a midfield battle, with both teams fighting to maintain possession. Susquehanna threatened late with two dangerous looks, but Ale Sternini came up strong to preserve the clean sheet.
The River Hawks outshot the Gophers 16-12 and held a slight 8-7 edge in corner kicks. Sternini played the full 90 minutes in net, recording six saves in the shutout effort. Aristimuno led the Gophers with five shot attempts in the contest.
With the win, the Gophers close out the regular season and lock in a postseason appearance at home. Goucher will host No. 5 seed Drew University on Beldon Field this Saturday, November 1, with kickoff set for 2 p.m.
