Gophers Pocket First Win Since 2005-06 Season
KINGS POINT, N.Y. - Goucher brought a halt to a 15-match losing streak that dated back to the 2005-06 season today when the Gophers earned a 52-42 victory over Drew. There was a third team involved in today's triangular competition and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy defeated both the Gophers, 76-21, and the Rangers, 76-27.

Sasha Verin (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. Hebron) of the Gophers was runner-up to John Albrecht from Merchant Marine in the 200-yard butterfly and placed fourth overall in two other individual events with his times of 2:19.23 in the 200-yard individual medley and 11:18.33 in the 1000-yard freestyle. He was clocked at 2:18.68 in the 200 butterfly.
Michael Polonchak (Harpers Ferry, WV) was Goucher's top performer in a pair of individual events as he was runner-up to Chris Funke from Merchant Marine in the 200-yard backstroke and was the third swimmer to touch in the 200-yard freestyle. Polonchak posted times of 2:28.21 in the 200 back and 2:08.38 in the 200 free.
Mac McDonald (New Port Richey, FL/Avon Old Farms) and Andrew Castro (San Francisco, CA/Stuart Hall) were runners-up in the 100 free and 500 free, respectively. McDonald completed the 100 free in :55.48; Castro's time in the 500 free was 7:21.63. Devin Myles (Turner, ME/Leavitt Area) placed third overall in the 50 free (:25.48) and Michael Ambrosio (Port Washington, NY/Paul D. Schreiber) was the third swimmer to touch in the 200 breast (2:45.81).
Goucher's top finish in a relay event was in the 200 free where the quartet of Ambrosio, Castro, McDonald and Myles turned in a time of 1:48.15 to place second overall.
The victory over Drew was the first for Goucher (1-8) since the Gophers knocked off Gallaudet, 59-49, on Jan. 21, 2006.
