Gophers Take Down Rangers, Bow to Mariners

Goucher's Georgi Shalamanov (Velingrad, Bulgaria/St. St. Kiril & Metodi) took first place in the 200-yard freestyle and was runner-up in the 200-yard breaststroke during a Landmark Conference triangular meet today that resulted in the Gophers defeating Drew, 64-30, but coming up short against Merchant Marine, 59-35.

TOWSON, Md. – Goucher's Georgi Shalamanov

first place in the 200-yard freestyle and was runner-up in the
200-yard breaststroke during a Landmark Conference triangular meet
today that resulted in the Gophers defeating Drew, 64-30, but
coming up short against Merchant Marine, 59-35.
Shalamanov's first-place performance in the 200 free was the only one of the meet for the Gophers, who finished the 2008-09 regular season with a 3-7 record. The freshman's winning time was 1:51.54; he completed the 200 breast in 2:22.41.
Goucher swimmers placed second in three other individual events and both relays: Sasha Verin (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) in the 200 butterfly (2:17.14), Devin Myles (Turner, Maine/Leavitt Area) in the 100 free (:58.78) and Kyle Williams (Andover, N.J./Newton) in the 200 back (2:05.54). In the 200 medley relay, the foursome of Williams, Shalamanov, Verin and Charlie Rooney (Sea Bright, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) turned in a time of 1:45.22; in the 200 free, Williams was joined by John Vincent (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt), Jordan Gaeta (Lawrenceville, Ga./Conserve School) and Michael Eshleman (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) and the unit was clocked at 1:48.96.
Up next for the Gophers are the Landmark Conference Swimming & Diving Championships, set for February 13-15 in Kings Point, N.Y.
