Rooney Touches First in 100 Butterfly, On Two Victorious Relays

MADISON, N.J. — Goucher produced the victorious quartets in both of the relays and the first-place performers in three individual events while coming away from this afternoon's triangular meet against two other Landmark Conference schools with a split. The Gophers (3-7, 1-4 Landmark) defeated Drew, 55-40, but came up short against the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, 56-39.

The Gophers took a 7-0 lead over both the Rangers (2-7, 0-2 Landmark) and the Mariners (4-1, 3-0 Landmark) by taking first place in the opening event, the 200-yard medley relay. The winning time was 1:41.45.

Likewise, Goucher closed out the meet with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:36.73).

Charlie Rooney (Sea Bright, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy), who swam the closing leg on the 200 medley relay and the first leg of the 200 free relay, also placed first in the 100 butterfly (:56.70). Georgi Shalamanov (Velingrad, Bulgaria/St. St. Kiril & Metodi), part of the victorious 200 medley relay, took first place in the 200 individual medley (2:05.06) and was runner-up in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.42); Kyle Williams (Andover, N.J./Newton), who led off for the Gophers in the 200 medley relay, placed first in the 100 backstroke (:58.22) and third in the 1000 free (10:55.27).
