Sophomore Lowers School 1000 Free Record by Nearly Three Seconds
MADISON, N.J. — As a reward for breaking a school record that had stood for more than a decade and placing first in a pair of events during a meet against Gallaudet and St. Mary's (Md.), Goucher's Georgi Shalamanov (Velingrad, Bulgaria/St. St. Kiril & Metodi) today was named Male Swimmer of the Week in the Landmark Conference.
Shalamanov was runner-up to Billy DeBoissiere of the Seahawks in the 1,000-yard freestyle, but his time of 10:24.02 lowered the school record in the event by nearly three full seconds. The former standard of 10:26.84 was established back in 1997 by Logan Smith.
The sophomore's first-place performances were in the 200 free (1:52.46) and 500 free (5:07.25).
