Williams Takes First in 100 Back as Gophers Earn Split

Shalamanov Finishes as Runner-Up in Three Individual Events

TOWSON, Md. — Kyle Williams (Andover, N.J./Newton) placed first in the 100-yard backstroke and Georgi Shalamanov (Velingrad, Bulgaria/St. St. Kiril & Metodi) was runner-up in three individual events today as Goucher came away from a Landmark Conference triangular meet with a split.

The Gophers defeated Drew, 77-45, but bowed to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, 85-33. The Mariners (4-1, 3-0 Landmark) were also victorious over the Rangers (1-7, 0-3 Landmark), 95-26.

Williams, who set a new school record (:55.07) in the 100 back at the 2010 Landmark Conference Men's Swimming & Diving Championships, completed the event today in :57.24. He also placed third in the 200 back (2:06.97).

Shalamanov's times in the three individual events in which he competed were :51.04 in the 100-yard freestyle, 1:51.66 in the 200 free and 5:11.06 in the 500 free.

Steve Baum (Fallston, Md./Fallston) took second place for the Gophers (3-7, 1-4 Landmark) in the 200-yard individual medley, which he completed in 2:26.63.

Third-place performances by Goucher swimmers, in addition to Williams in the 200 back, came from Charlie Leonard (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) in the 100-yard butterfly (:57.71) and 200 butterfly (2:21.17), Dean Silverman (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) in the 1000 free (11:36.96) and Brendan McFadden (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) in the 50 free (:23.36).

One of Goucher's entries in the 200 free relay placed second with its time of 1:43.78. Leonard swam the opening leg and was followed by Patrick McNeel (Flagstaff, Ariz./Flagstaff), Silverman and Kevin Wons (Bedford, N.H./Souhegan).
