Split Provides Gophers with First 2010-11 Win

Two Individual First-Place Performances Out of Williams, Shalamanov

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. — Kyle Williams (Andover, N.J./Newton) and Georgi Shalamanov (Velingrad, Bulgaria/St. St. Kiril & Metodi) combined to finish first in four separate individual events for Goucher to help the Gophers come away from a tri-meet with both a win over Gallaudet and a loss to St. Mary's (Md.).

The Gophers (1-3) defeated the Bison (1-2), 124-76, but came up short against the Seahawks (3-1), 116.5-83.5. St. Mary's was also victorious over Gallaudet, 156-45.

Williams was the top performer in the 1,000-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke, posting times of 10:54.42 and :56.10, respectively, in those two events. He also placed third in the 50 free, completing that event in :23.61.

Shalamanov was the first swimmer to touch in the 400 individual medley and 100 breaststroke. His winning times were 4:26.85 in the 400 IM and 1:03.36 in the 100 breast. In addition, he finished in third place in the 500 free (5:14.86).

Charlie Leonard (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) was runner-up in two events, finishing behind Jackson Webb from St. Mary's both times. In the 50 free, Webb posted a time of :22.34 and Leonard followed at :23.33; in the 100 butterfly, Webb was clocked at :55.67 and Leonard at :56.11.

Brendan McFadden (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) took third in the 100 free (:52.51).

Entries from Goucher placed second in the 200 medley relay and third in the 200 free relay.
